Configure your Internet Settings to use a proxy IP address in Windows.

The following article explains how to easily configure your Internet settings in Windows to use a proxy IP address. This will enable you to hide your IP address while surfing the Internet and browsing web pages.

Before using the following guide, be sure to have the proxy IP address and the port of the proxy server that you wish to connect to. For your convenience, here are a few websites that maintain updated lists of proxy servers and ports:

Proxy Settings in Internet Explorer 10 for Windows

  1. In the Internet Explorer toolbar, click the settings drop-down menu located in the upper right-hand corner. The icon looks like a cog . Click on the “Internet options” link in the drop-down, which is just above “About Internet Explorer”.
  2. You should now see the “Internet Options” window. Click the “Connections” tab at the top of the window.
  3. Under the “Local Area Network (LAN) Settings” section, click the LAN settings button.
  4. The LAN Settings window should now be visible. There are two sections, “Automatic Configuration” and “Proxy Settings”.
  5. Check the box next to “Use a proxy server for your LAN”.
  6. Make sure the box next to “bypass proxy server for local addresses” is NOT CHECKED.
  7. Enter the IP address of the proxy server you want to connect to. Make sure to also enter the port number for the proxy. Common port numbers are “8080” and “3128”.
  8. Verify that your Internet connection still works by viewing any web page.

Proxy Settings in Google Chrome (ver. 29) for Windows

  1. In the Chrome toolbar, click the drop-down menu located in the upper right-hand corner. Click on the “Settings” link in the drop-down, which is just above “About Google Chrome”.
  2. You should now be at a page in the browser with “chrome://settings/” in the URL box at the top of the browser. Click the link at the bottom that reads “Show advanced settings…”.
  3. Next, scroll down to the heading entitled “Network”. Click the button that says “Change proxy settings…”.
  4. You should now see the “Internet Properties” window. Under the “Local Area Network (LAN) Settings” section, click the LAN settings button.
  5. The LAN Settings window should now be visible. There are two sections, “Automatic Configuration” and “Proxy Settings”.
  6. Check the box next to “Use a proxy server for your LAN”.
  7. Make sure the box next to “bypass proxy server for local addresses” is NOT CHECKED.
  8. Enter the IP address of the proxy server you want to connect to. Make sure to also enter the port number for the proxy. Common port numbers are “8080” and “3128”.
  9. Verify that your Internet connection still works by viewing any web page.

Proxy Settings in Mozilla Firefox (ver. 23) for Windows

  1. In the Firefox Browser, click the Firefox drop-down menu located in the upper left-hand corner. Click on the “Options > Options” link in the drop-down.
  2. You should now be viewing the “Options” window. Click on the “Advanced” tab.
  3. Next, click the sub-tab entitled “Network”.
  4. You should now see three sections, the top section being “Connection”. Under the “Connection” section, click the “Settings…” button.
  5. The “Connection Settings” window should now be visible. Check the radio button next to “Manual Proxy Configuration”.
  6. Enter the IP address of the proxy server you want to connect to next to HTTP proxy. Make sure to also enter the port number for the proxy. Common port numbers are “8080” and “3128”.
  7. Next, check the box next to “Use this proxy for all protocols”.
  8. Verify that your Internet connection still works by viewing any web page.

Proxy Settings Safari (ver. 5.1.7) for Windows

  1. In the Safari Browser, click the Safari drop-down menu located in the upper right-hand corner. The icon looks like a cog .
  2. Click on the “Preferences” link in the drop-down, which is located just above “Help”.
  3. You should now be viewing the “Options” window. Click on the “Advanced” tab.
  4. Next, click the button entitled “Change Settings” next to “Proxies”.
  5. You should now see three sections, the top section being “Connection”. Under the “Connection” section, click the “Settings…” button.
  6. The “Connection Settings” window should now be visible. Check the radio button next to “Manual Proxy Configuration”.
  7. Enter the IP address of the proxy server you want to connect to next to HTTP proxy. Make sure to also enter the port number for the proxy. Common port numbers are “8080” and “3128”.
